I live my work life as as on-line biz entrepreneur. I own 2 on-line businesses. I enjoy staying ahead of the curve. I’m told that I’m a social marketing ninja. I specialise in Facebook lead generation and strategy. I am a published author and web-writer, and intermittent blogger.
In life I wear a number of diverse hats…but they all sit on one head.
I was one of those insatiable children who never grew out of asking “why, who, what when, where how”. I have always been hungry for new information and actively pursue and relish fresh, new experiences as readily as some people crave and seek out fine wines
Back at school, my teachers used to tell me “curiosity killed the cat”. I guess they found a slightly overactive and inquisitive eight year old who delighted in pushing and testing the rules, a bit of a handful.
I wonder what that might tell you about me?
Well …
Other than learning how to make the best of a situation, you might say that I am much more interested in accumulating variety and experience, than following the rules.
I’m a people person. If you are willing to share yourself authentically with others distance is no barrier to forging friendship. I truly enjoy engaging with new people and places, while at the same time stepping back to get a feel for details and the big picture.
Among my friends and colleagues I am know as a straight-talking, forthright communicator and practical visionary. Something of an adventurer, a creative thinker and calculated risk taker. When it comes to business I’m an ‘early adopter’. This means I keep my finger on the pulse of change and use technology to stay just far enough ahead of the crowd to be positioned in the right place, at the right time to create and participate in profitable opportunities.

I love it! You see I get to do what I want and what I’m good at, and get paid for it.
Life’s defining moments
Some people say I’m lucky to be living a life with such diversity and freedom. In truth luck had nothing to do with it. You see when was about twenty, five major events happened in my life within months of each other.
- My father died
- I gave birth to my son
- My partner ran off with my best friend
- I was made homeless
- My younger sister died of leukaemia
To put it mildly this was a major life shake up.
So there I was, confused, lost, broken hearted and grieving to the core. A young, homeless, single mom with a new baby, trying to figure out how to make ends meet.
All that emotion provoked some soul searching and an attempt to answer a number of profound questions about life. I soon realised that life is simply unpredictable, that there are no certainties. I was lucky in a way to have grasped early on that:
“‘Time is not for wasting and here is no time like the present to Live”
I can remember looking down at my baby boy as he slept in my arms. He was all bundled up in blankets to ward off the cold. I was worrying about how I would clothe and feed him, wondering if I would be a good mother, concerned about how I was going to look out for him if I was out at work every day – fearful about what type of hand life was about to deal him?
And then in one bright moment of clarity I realised that fate had nothing to do with his future or mine for that matter. He had every possibility open to him. He could have any life he could choose – and then I realised that despite my current circumstances I could too. All I had to do was choose how I wanted to live and then find a way to have it happen.
Sweet clarity
That moment of clarity opened my eyes and set my sights higher.
I recognised that flexibility and adaptability were the keys to not simply surviving, but also to thriving. That the route to income security was not about having a job (this was 1983 and the UK was slipping into a financial crisis) but to make myself incredibly useful to other people.
I did a quick mental assessment of myself and my resources and I discovered that although I had very little in terms of worldly goods I was rich in intelligence, tenacity and talent. I resolved to work on anything and everything I was good at (that other people would pay for), and to become the best at it that I could be.
Getting the right kind of education
I read a lot of self-help books and learnt how to overcome fear and procrastination – how to get those negative, self effacing voices under control. I discovered the bliss of meditation and the power of positive visualisation. I found I was good at it and began to teach it to stressed out banking executives in the City of London.
I’m not going to say that starting out living my life-by-design choice was a walk in the park. After all this was Yuppy Thatcherite Britain in the 1980′s and I was bucking the “grab it while you can” trend big time. I had to stand firm in my resolve to do things my way; to keep things simple and live a priority driven minimalist life.
I’ll be honest with you, I was not particularly financially ambitious. At that time I simply wanted enough money to pay the bills and get by. My driving ambition was to be a full time mom for my son and to do that I simply had to earn ‘enough’. After all, as one friend told me – “a single parent can’t afford to be a part-time parent”.
I enrolled for some classes in creative writing and journalism, and took a loan to study counselling skills, hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming. Thus began a life-long career in writing, personal development and emotional medicine that generated an adequate work-from-home income that always paid the bills.
It was 1985 and finally, the year my son started nursery school there I was – SUCCESS - a work from home, stay-at-home mom with adequate income and savings in the bank.
Living a lifestyle designer life
Well, things have changed a lot over the last 30 years, and the pace of change accelerates at a speed that most of us are ill equipped to manage or make sense of. In many ways life is much easier these days and full of extreme possibility (but only if you know where to look and how to take advantage of it) . In other ways, it is clear to see that for those still trying to live by 20th Century rules and expectations, life is getting tougher and tougher.
That is where I come in. My philosophy of making myself incredibly useful to other people by being ahead of the curve is still paying off for both me and my clients.
Now, with thirty years of lifestyle design experience under my belt, and with my way of life becoming trendy, it rocks my world to help others experience the time, location and income freedom I experience everyday.
